General description
Gamma-synuclein is one four proteins in the synuclein family, Gamma-synuclein appears to play a role in neurofilament network integrity and interaction. Gamma synuclein is important for axonal architecture and maintenance and the protein interacts with both the MAPK and ELK-1 signaling networks. Gamma synuclein is a cytoplasmically associated protein that is also strongly associated with cytoskeletal elements. During cell division, gamma synuclein is associated with the poles of the spindle and interruption causes defects in cytokinesis. Gamma synuclein is highly expressed in the brain but can also be found expressed in the heart, skeletal muscle, colon, and gonads. Gamma synuclein is also expressed in many invasive cancers.
